Phrasal Verb: cut off

Definition: This verb can refer to either: a) the service or supply that is cut off e.g. water, electricity, etc. or b) the person who is cut off to disconnect, interrupt or discontinue something or someone.

Examples:

  • When the employee spoke up in the meeting, the manager quickly cut him off.
  • The country set a trade embargo against it’s enemy. This meant that the supply of oil to that country was abruptly cut off.
  • I got a new phone and I was happy with it until my phones calls suddenly got cut off.
