Definition: to stop employing (a worker), often for a short time because there is not enough work (not because of poor performance)

Examples:

  • Because of the slowing economy, the company had to lay off over twenty workers.
  • My father got laid off so the CEO could make more money.
  • The goal of this company is to lay off as few people as possible during the recession.
